Thomas Wisecup turned in 23 points and Kennedy Drey followed with 20 for Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as Wartburg College used a 20-9 run over the final 5:30 minutes to hand BVU an 88-77 loss to close out the regular season.
Wisecup did most of his damage early in the second half to help bring BVU back from a 38-29 halftime deficit. He scored 17 of his game-high 23 over the final 20 minutes and went 5-of-8 from downtown, going over 100 career makes in the process.
Drey closed the regular season with his fourth straight double-double, adding a game-high 10 boards. David Jeffries chimed in with 13 points and four rebounds before fouling out.
The Beavers held a 16-15 lead midway through the opening half before Wartburg scored six straight to take a 21-16 lead. The Beavers again tied things at 26-26, only to see the Knights go on an 18-3 run over the final 3:18 of the half and take a 38-29 halftime lead.
Wisecup nailed a three-pointer with 12:09 to play to give BVU a 54-53 advantage - the team's first lead since it was 16-15. A jumper by Wisecup and a free-throw by Drey made it a 65-59 BVU lead with 7:37 left.
From there, it would be all Wartburg, as the Knights nailed five three-point buckets to open up an 82-72 cushion with 1:33 remaining. Wisecup hit his final three on the ensuing possession, but that was as close as the team would get down the stretch, as it fell for the fourth straight game.
Nate Woeste and Jordan Cannoon each turned in 20 points to help pace the Knights, who qualifed into the league tournament with the win.
Buena Vista closes out the regular season at 14-11 (10-6 IIAC) and will be the third-seed in next week's IIAC Tournament. The Beavers will host these same Knights (36 seed) on Tuesday night at 8:00pm inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
