Baseball is Third in IIAC Preseason Coaches Poll

The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) released its 2018 IIAC Preseason Baseball Coaches Poll on Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 14), and Buena Vista has been picked by the league coaches to finish third.

Coming off a tie for third a year ago, the Beavers totaled 48 points in the poll to finish just in front of Coe (43) and just behind the University of Dubuque (55).  The Spartans also received three first-place votes while defending champion Wartburg landed six first-place votes and 61 points to be tabbed as the coaches' favorites to win the race in 2018.

BVU has a veteran group of position players back along with several pitchers with experience on the bump, and head coach Steve Eddie is hoping that good mix coupled with some exciting additions will benefit the team going into this season.

"We are looking forward to an exciting 2018 season," he says.  "We have a good group of guys this year who really enjoy being around each other. We will need to have a consistent mind set as the IIAC will be well balanced this year."

Buena Vista was 26-17 (15-9 IIAC) a year ago and ranked in the top-three during IIAC play in both ERA and fielding percentage.  The team returns First Team All-IIAC performer Noah Paper at shortstop.

The Beavers open their 2018 campaign at Washington University of St. Louis for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on March 3. Iowa Conference play begins on March 23-24 with a three-game weekend series at Luther College.  They'll home their home campaign on April 3 with a doubleheader against Nebraska Wesleyan.
